Complete and ready to meet its new guardian:
The cover measures about 4″ x 7.5″ and is made from vintage French linen, beautiful quality. The edges are bound with a strip of silk fabric, and the book fastens with silk ribbon attached to a button on the front and back cover.
This will appear in the shop shortly. Since I can only have a limited number of photographs in the shop, I’m picturing every page here.
(above) back cover
The wide broderie anglaise inside the covers makes a convenient little pocket to store scraps of something precious or little hand written notes.
pages 2 and 3. The wide lace on the right is slightly age-stained but is clean. Most of the little lace fragments are cotton, and all are very old – I would guess at least 100 years, though I’m no expert at identifying lace. Each piece of lace is hand stitched to the black silk page with silk thread.
pages 4 and 5
pages 6 and 7. The little fragment on the left (page 6) is one of my favourites as it is hand embroidered:
I’ve attached this piece along the top only so that you can flip it up and see the underside of the embroidery.
pages 8 and 9
pages 10 and 11
pages 12 and 13 – I left the last page blank so that you can perhaps add some of your own precious lace treasures to this little collection.
…and the last page and inside back cover, with a second broderie anglaise pocket.
The second book is similar but not quite the same, and has one fewer page because I changed the method of binding on the second book, stitching double signatures instead of single pages as I did for the first. I’ll post pictures of the second book here too before letting it into the shop.
