Pieces of Spring

I began work on the jacket over the weekend, laying pieces of cotton and linen fabric over a foundation of fine soft quilter’s calico. I’m aiming for the colours of very early spring, as in this quick sketch:

oil pastel with watercolour wash, 5" x 7"

The back and front of the jacket are all in one piece, with no shoulder seam, and the sleeves are rectangles with a slight angle cut off each edge to give a very small amount of shaping.

The foundation piecing is now more or less done and the fabrics are mostly tacked in place, and for now I’m enjoying the colours and the texture of the fabrics. In last year’s fabric swap, Arlee sent me a fragment of pieced patchwork that turned out to be perfect for the back:

Our sky today has been all of these colours.

Love the watercolour. It feels so strange that you are already busy with spring I still have a little bit of snow around and very stormy weather. Not at all a spring reminder.

Well, the seasons and the weather don’t always match up… it’s been quite stormy here too, but the snowdrops are flowering, the ewes are lambing, and the birds are starting to build nests – all signs that Spring has indeed sprung, despite the continuing cold 🙂

Such beautiful soft colours. I can’t wait to see the result.

The colours are so soft and I can really believe that spring is just around the corner, as long as the winds don’t blow it off course.

Beautiful colors. Spring still seems pretty far away here.
